What do we want in life?

March 3, 2022

One of the things that I have grappled with in my life is to understand the purpose of life. The realization that I have come to is, the whole idea of life is to live life and live it meaningfully. And that meaning has balance in it. Balance of all the important aspects of life- work, family, friends, experiences, growth, money, philanthropy and more; they all come together to make a life worth living.

The problem happens when someone tries to do one or two of these things and just too much of it at that. So if I just put all my focus into a singular aspect like professional growth or fruitful romantic relationship or bonding with family, it leads to an imbalance. Anything which is not done with moderation, without any semblance of balance deviates you from the purpose of life. Because life is to be lived!

I would like to give an example of this. Now I am in education as a business. It is rewarding and I am confident of my contributions to both my institution and to the society with my roles here. I am not interested in going to a completely different sector today on a whim. Instead I work towards growing in a particular direction. I believe in a certain manner of philanthropic work, which comes from my own personal experiences and I don’t try to imitate what others are doing.

You need to live with the right kind of thoughts and actions. There has to be a lot of gratitude, which I believe a lot of people don’t have. After all, true compassion is a rare virtue to possess. I am a firm believer of the fact that the more gratitude people have for their lives, the more compassionate they become.

As for me? That is something I am looking out for as well. I believe life is a perpetual journey of realizations and I am not saying I have all of it. I am trying to get there and it’s something that I am conscious about. I understand that my emotional and financial growth as well as my spirituality are closely attached to this, which is why I think it is very important to have that balance and live my life in a purposeful and meaningful manner.

I think that is the purpose of life – to live it with balance and to grow in every single aspect of it. I think that’s what makes life more purposeful. Because anything you do binarily, you can grow in it of course, but you can’t find purpose. And without purpose how can we realize the true goals of life – love, peace and happiness!
